Speaking at an event for business leaders in Qatar, Trump said he had told Cook that he did not want Apple to set up a factory in India because “it is one of the countries with the highest tariffs in the world.” Trump revealed that India proposed a deal “basically agreeing to us to impose zero tariffs.” Trump also pointed out that he told Cook: “We have been very good to you, we have tolerated all the factories you have built in China over the years.” “We don’t want you to build factories in India anymore, India can take care of itself.” Trump said that the conclusion of the conversation with Cook was that Apple will “increase production in the United States.” India and the United States are negotiating a trade agreement. The Indian government has not yet commented on Trump’s remarks, and the details of the content of the trade agreement negotiations have not yet been made public; as for Trump’s remarks, they may hit Apple’s iPhone plan.
