Members of various civil society groups in the Philippines gathered outside a gas station to stage a protest demonstration, expressing their strong opposition to the recent surge in fuel prices. The protest coincided with the day new fuel price adjustments officially took effect—a day on which both gasoline and diesel prices saw simultaneous, substantial hikes—a move that has already sparked widespread public outrage. Speaking at the scene, protesters pointed out that the skyrocketing cost of fuel is by no means merely a numerical fluctuation; rather, it poses a direct threat to the basic livelihoods of the Philippines’ most vulnerable populations, exacerbating their already difficult living conditions. They called upon the government to take immediate intervention measures to alleviate the mounting pressure on the public’s standard of living. Ronnel Arambulo, Vice Chairperson of the National Federation of Fisherfolk Organizations in the Philippines, stated candidly that rising fuel costs have forced fishermen to scale back their operations and reduce their fishing efficiency. “The continuous rise in fuel prices has dealt a devastating blow to us fishermen; in fact, we have been forced to cut our daily fishing time from the usual six to eight hours down to a mere four hours.” Glo Fernandez, a coordinator based in Quezon City, noted that fuel prices are directly linked to the cost of living for urban residents, with public transportation and food expenditures bearing the most significant direct impact. She mentioned that the rise in fuel prices has triggered a ripple effect, prompting many public transportation operators to demand fare hikes for “jeepneys”—a move that will undoubtedly further strain the already stretched budgets of impoverished urban families. Fernandez added: “We were already struggling to cover our daily expenses—especially against the backdrop of constantly rising prices for basic commodities—and now, with fuel prices soaring even higher, sustaining a livelihood has become truly untenable.” As the new fuel prices officially took effect, these diverse civil society groups continued to make their voices heard; in addition to calling for the repeal of the Oil Deregulation Law, they demanded that the government lift the Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on petroleum products, hoping that these measures would provide timely relief to struggling Filipino consumers and lighten the heavy burden that rising fuel prices have placed on their lives. Currently, the related protests are proceeding in an orderly manner, while the government has not yet issued a clear response.
