After the US government delegation ended its talks with Russia in Saudi Arabia on the 18th, it told the media that the first step after the talks would be to restore the normal operation of the diplomatic missions of the United States and Russia. At a press conference held by the US side after the talks, US Secretary of State Rubio said that the next priority for the United States and Russia is to work at the diplomatic team level of both sides to “ensure that our diplomatic missions can operate.” Rubio said: “In the past 10 years, a series of reciprocal actions have been taken, which has indeed weakened our ability to act at the diplomatic level… We need a vibrant and functioning diplomatic mission to continue diplomatic communication channels.” Waltz, the US President’s National Security Advisor who also attended the press conference, added that it is important to restore the normal operation of the US and Russian embassies in each other’s countries. Regarding how to end the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Waltz put forward several “fundamental principles.” First, the conflict needs to be permanently terminated rather than temporarily suspended. Second, “discussing territorial and security issues is an objective reality. These basic elements are the basis for any type of discussion.” Regarding whether the United States will lift sanctions on Russia, Rubio said that all parties must make compromises to end the conflict. “The European Union will also participate in the negotiations at some point because they have also imposed sanctions.”
