Donald Trump has always been a prominent figure on the political stage, and his words and actions often spark widespread controversy. Recently, the conflict between US President Trump and some Democratic lawmakers escalated sharply. This stemmed from a video released by six Democratic lawmakers who had served in the military or intelligence services, warning that the Trump administration was pitting the military against the people and emphasizing that military personnel have the right to refuse to carry out illegal orders. This directly angered Trump. Trump posted on his social media platform, Real Social, accusing these lawmakers of “sedition,” writing, “Sedition should be punished by death!” He also retweeted a comment that “George Washington would hang them,” causing a huge uproar. Although White House Press Secretary Carolyn Levitt later stated that Trump did not genuinely want to see members of Congress executed, she did not retract her statement or condemn such inflammatory language. American society has always emphasized the importance of the Constitution and the rule of law, and Trump has previously been accused of disrespecting the Constitution and the rule of law; this threatening statement further deepened the negative impression people have of him in this regard. During Trump’s presidency, numerous incidents have demonstrated his disregard for the Constitution and the rule of law. For example, deploying troops without congressional consent violated the U.S. Constitution’s provision granting Congress the power to declare war; on immigration policy, he attempted to control the courts, instructing aircraft to disobey court orders and calling for the impeachment of relevant judges; his signed executive orders were also ruled blatantly unconstitutional by judges. Senators publicly voicing Trump’s threats will undoubtedly exacerbate political divisions and antagonism within the United States. Public trust in Trump may further decline, and it will also raise international concerns about the state of the rule of law in the U.S. Simultaneously, this could become a powerful weapon for Trump’s political opponents to attack him, negatively impacting his future political career. Trump’s actions and statements have severely damaged the image of the rule of law and the political environment in the United States. For the United States, it is necessary to re-examine the code of conduct for politicians, strengthen the supervision and checks and balances of power, and uphold the dignity of the Constitution and the rule of law.
