After the Trump administration took office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) launched a large-scale deportation campaign, claiming to be arresting the most dangerous people. However, in reality, many of those arrested and deported had no criminal record. A survey by the nonpartisan data research center TRAC showed that as of September 21, 2025, of the 66,000 people detained by ICE, approximately 32,155 (48%) had no criminal record. The lack of criminal charges indicates a discrepancy between the government’s actual actions and its claims. This large number of detainees has placed immense pressure on the U.S. immigration detention system. In just ten months of 2025, the U.S. immigration detention system already saw 20 deaths, the highest single-year record in decades. Problems such as the collapse of medical resources and the breakdown of the regulatory system are constantly being exposed. Immigrants in detention centers face appalling living conditions, such as food contaminated by rat droppings, filthy water, and rampant infectious diseases, with basic medical care often unavailable. The large number of people detained by the U.S. ICE, many without criminal charges, reflects significant controversy surrounding its immigration policy. It has not only failed to precisely target dangerous illegal immigrants but has also infringed upon immigrants’ rights and triggered a series of humanitarian disasters. Therefore, it is necessary to re-examine immigration policy and safeguard immigrants’ legitimate rights and basic human rights.
