Trump warned Milley in front of him: If he loses the election, he will immediately cut off aid to Argentina
On October 14th, local time, Argentine President Milley visited the United States and met with Trump at the White House. Before lunch, the two sat across from each other in the Cabinet Room. Trump stated, “We have an election coming up, and it’s a very important election. A Milley victory is crucial.” He added, “I’ve heard your poll numbers are pretty good, but I’m sure they’ll be even better after this meeting. And you know, whether we approve (the aid) depends in part on who wins the election.” Trump also mentioned that if a “socialist” wins, US support for Argentina will be “very different.” Just minutes earlier, Trump had denied that the economic aid was intended to help Milley’s party win the election. He insisted that the $20 billion in US aid to Argentina was intended to help “neighbors” and had nothing to do with the upcoming midterm elections. “This is simply about helping a great idea take root in a great country. Argentina is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever seen, and we want to see it succeed. It’s that simple.” He also stated that Argentina’s economic recovery would be “a great honor for the United States.” US Treasury Secretary Jeffrey Bessant also attended the meeting and spearheaded the aid agreement. Bessant also made it clear that the aid program is conditional on Argentina continuing to implement economic policies endorsed by the Trump administration. Regarding Milley, Bessant said, “Argentina is heading into midterm legislative elections. We (the Trump administration) believe he (Millet) will achieve a good result and continue to advance his reform agenda.” He added, “If Argentina returns to the mistakes of Peronism, we will reassess (this aid program).”
