US President Donald Trump stated at the US military base in Yokosuka, Japan, that his administration might deploy military forces “more than the National Guard” in some cities to combat domestic crime. Trump made these remarks during his visit to Japan and meeting with newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Speaking to US forces stationed in Japan aboard the USS George Washington aircraft carrier, he said, “We have cities in trouble, and we can’t allow that to happen. We’re sending in the National Guard, and if necessary, we’ll send in more than the National Guard, because we want to make sure our cities are safe.” He emphasized, “Whether people like it or not, we’re going to do this. We can’t let people die in our own cities.” Trump’s statement reflects his concern for domestic security and his willingness to use military force. This move is seen as a further escalation of his hardline domestic security policies and has once again brought the National Guard mobilization, already embroiled in numerous lawsuits, into the spotlight. This year, Trump has repeatedly ordered the deployment of the National Guard in cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington D.C., Portland, and Memphis to combat violent crime and illegal immigration. However, apart from Memphis, most governors and mayors of other cities opposed the move and filed lawsuits in federal court challenging the legitimacy of the president’s federalization of the National Guard.
