As unrest in Los Angeles continues to escalate, discontent over President Trump’s immigration policies is growing nationwide. Demonstrations against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have spread beyond Los Angeles and are expected to spread to more cities this week. Protests have already taken place in San Francisco, Sacramento, Houston, San Antonio, Chicago, and New York. Protesters in these cities held rallies in support of protesters in Los Angeles. At least 30 new protests are planned across the country in response to the Trump administration’s recent immigration roundups. Organizers have scheduled demonstrations in nearly every major city, demonstrating growing opposition to the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies and the deployment of National Guard troops in Los Angeles. The protests were sparked by a series of workplace immigration raids last week and escalated after David Huerta, president of the Service Employees International Union of California, was arrested during a protest in Los Angeles last Friday. Huerta, a prominent labor and civil rights leader, had his arrest sparked further outrage and anger. At least 150 people have been arrested in Los Angeles since the protests began. City officials warned that the chaos could escalate further this week. Over the weekend, Trump bypassed California Governor Gavin Newsom and signed a presidential memorandum to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to the Los Angeles area, citing the need to “assist in immigration enforcement.” U.S. Northern Command announced on the 9th that 1,700 National Guard troops had been deployed to the Los Angeles area. Newsom denounced Trump’s move as an “infringement on state sovereignty.” The California government has filed a lawsuit challenging Trump’s decision.
