Trump says NATO will pay for weapons aid to Ukraine
U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 10th that the United States has reached an agreement with NATO to deliver weapons to aid Ukraine, and NATO will pay for these weapons in full. Trump also said that a “big announcement” about Russia will be made on the 14th. In a telephone interview with NBC News’ “Talk to the Press”, Trump said: “We are delivering weapons to NATO, and NATO will pay for it, 100%… We will deliver Patriot missiles to NATO, and then NATO will distribute them to Ukraine.” Trump added that the United States provides weapons to NATO, and NATO will “reimburse the cost of these weapons in full.” This is Trump’s latest statement on U.S. military aid to Ukraine. The U.S. Department of Defense and the White House announced on the 1st that they would suspend some military aid to Ukraine. Several U.S. media reported that the decision was due to concerns about the excessive decline in U.S. arms stocks. Trump then said on the 7th that more weapons would be provided to Ukraine, and on the 8th he approved the delivery of more defensive weapons to Ukraine. Trump may use his presidential power to approve the delivery of more weapons to Ukraine. These weapons may be worth about $300 million and may include Patriot missiles and medium-range rockets. In a telephone interview with NBC News on the 10th, Trump also said, “I am disappointed in Russia,” and said that he would make a “major statement” about Russia on the 14th, but did not mention the content of the statement. Trump and Russian President Putin had a phone call on the 3rd to discuss topics including the Ukraine issue. Putin said at the time that Russia would not give up on achieving its established goals in Ukraine.
