Pence slams Trump: Making dolls affordable for ordinary people is part of the American dream
“Whatever happens in my future, I will strive to be a consistent voice for conservative values, which I believe are not only the right policies for the Republican Party, but also the best path for the American people to an unlimited future,” Pence said in an interview with CNN. Pence served as vice president during Trump’s first term. Pence said that Trump’s trade policy in his first term was successful, but he is now on a completely different path. Pence is worried that Trump’s “reciprocal tariffs” will lead to inflation, hurt consumers and ultimately hurt the US economy. Pence said that he had “many long conversations” with Trump on trade issues during Trump’s first term. He admitted that the two had deep philosophical differences on trade issues, and Trump held the “historical view that ultimately setting a certain minimum tariff threshold for all goods entering the United States will benefit the American public and our economy.” Pence said he himself believes in free trade. Pence also said: “I do worry that when the so-called 90-day suspension period (of reciprocal tariffs) ends, even the administration has admitted that there may be price shocks in the economy and there may be shortages of goods.” Pence was also asked about Trump’s recent remarks that American children can only have fewer dolls. He responded that cheap goods are part of the reason why Americans can live within their means. “I have two adult daughters and three young granddaughters. Look, making dolls affordable for ordinary people and toys affordable for children for every family is really part of the American dream.” He also said: “The American people will see the consequences of tariffs, and they will ask the government to change its policies.”
