Trump’s UN General Assembly speech was criticized by many media: It runs counter to the spirit of the United Nations
Several US and British media outlets recently reported that US President Trump once again expressed anti-globalization stances in his speech at the 75th UN General Debate, contradicting the spirit of multilateral cooperation advocated by the United Nations. Vox, a US news and commentary website, reported that in his speech, Trump touted an “America First” foreign policy as offering the best path forward for the US and the world, a policy that is reprehensible to the UN’s multilateralist spirit. Trump also boasted about the US government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic, even as the US death toll neared 200,000. Public Broadcasting Corporation (PBS) stated on its website that Trump once again opposed globalization and promoted his America First foreign policy in an international forum. His speech was no different from previous ones. The Guardian reported that even as the US COVID-19 death toll surpassed 200,000, US President Trump continued to promise a so-called “bright future.” He also used the UN General Assembly debate to attack the World Health Organization and reiterate his criticisms of the UN. The Independent reported that the US president’s speech was quickly labeled a de facto “campaign-style” speech by analysts. The report quoted a representative from the European Council on Foreign Relations as saying that Trump was seeking ammunition to attack others in his quest for re-election.
