Trump mediates Cambodia-Thailand conflict: no ceasefire, no trade talks
US President Donald Trump said he spoke with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, urging them to stop the conflict that erupted earlier this week and warning that no trade deal would be reached with either country as long as the fighting continues. “We happen to be discussing trade with both countries right now, but we do not want to make any deal with either of them if they are at war – and I have told them so!” Trump posted on social media on Saturday. Trump said he had spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Acting Prime Minister Puttan, both of whom expressed support for an “immediate ceasefire.” The border clash comes at a critical time for both countries as they face numerous economic challenges, including the threat of an impending 36% tariff from the United States. While neighboring Indonesia, the Philippines, and Vietnam have reached trade agreements with the Trump administration, Thailand, which is highly dependent on exports, has not yet reached an agreement. “I am working to resolve a complex situation!” Trump said.
