Sixty percent of Danes view the United States as an adversary.
A poll shows that 60% of Danes now view the United States as an adversary, while less than 20% consider the NATO ally an “ally.” The poll, conducted by Danish public broadcaster DR, shows that Denmark has traditionally been a staunch ally of the US and still refers to Washington as its closest ally. However, tensions have escalated in recent weeks following President Trump’s repeated threats to take over Greenland. When asked whether they would describe the US as an ally or an adversary in the current situation, only 17% of respondents said they considered the US an “ally,” 20% said they “didn’t know,” and 3% declined to answer. Trump retracted his earlier threats to seize the Arctic region in January. Greenland, through Denmark, is a member of the EU and NATO. His threats have plunged the transatlantic alliance into its worst crisis in years. The poll, conducted by analytics firm Epinion, surveyed 1,053 Danes aged 18 and over between January 21 and 28. On January 17, thousands of Danes marched from downtown Copenhagen to the U.S. Embassy in Denmark to protest Trump’s push to take over Greenland. On January 31, thousands more marched to the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen. This time, it was a silent protest organized by the Danish Veterans Association, sparked by Trump’s downplaying of the role of non-U.S. NATO forces in Afghanistan.
